Melody JohnsonKathleen HicksWHAT: A partnership between the FWISD, the City of Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Chambers

WHO: Fort Worth Mayor Pro-tem Kathleen Hicks, FWISD Superintendent Melody Johnson, volunteers, students and parents

WHEN: Saturday, September 6, 2008, 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Neighborhoods around Eastern Hills, O.D. Wyatt and Diamond Hill-Jarvis High Schools.

SUMMARY: School and city leaders will walk through targeted neighborhoods and knock on doors in an effort to engage with students and parents to Prevail to Graduation. At the same time, the three schools will be fully staffed to re-enroll students who are convinced into returning to classes.

The City of Fort Worth, the Fort Worth ISD and the Fort Worth Chambers are encouraging the community to be proactive in encouraging students to stay in school until they graduate.

Prevail to Graduation is modeled after a similar successful initiative in Houston where more than 3,900 students have returned to school.

“The young people of Fort Worth are truly one of our greatest assets. Their education is a priority for me and my fellow council members,” said Mayor Mike Moncrief. “Fort Worth is pleased to join forces with FWISD to help encourage students to finish high school. Their future and the future of our city depends on it.”

Volunteers are needed to conduct phone banks for contacting potential returnees as well as for walking the neighborhoods. Those interested can contact Cindy Boyd at 817-207-9633; Dr. Danna Diaz at 817-871-2510; or Carol Everhart at 817-392-2227.
