  AHHS GOLFER IS STATE CHAMP

FArlington Heights State 4A Golf Champion.ort Worth, Texas – Chelsea Mocio, a junior at Fort Worth ISD’s Arlington Heights High School, is the Texas 4A State Golf Champion. She won the state title on May 12 ending the two day tournament with a one-under-par 143.

Last year Chelsea placed sixth in the same tournament.  In the ensuing twelve months she improved in many facets of the game including improving her strength.  All the practice and preparation paid off.  Chelsea shot a 2-under par 70 the first day of play, hitting excellent shots all day.

“It was the best I had ever seen her hit the ball,” said Chelsea’s coach, Tom Bates. “She drove the ball in the fairways and hit the greens – close to the pins.”

At the conclusion of the first round she was in a three-way tie for first place. The second day started off the same as the first.  Everything had to be identical.  She and her supporters had to eat breakfast at the same place with everyone sitting in the same booths and in the same chairs.  Nothing was going to jeopardize any luck that she had found on day one. However, she didn’t hit the ball as closely as she had during the first round but finished with a one-over par 73 to complete the tournament with a 143 one-under-par.

She was the leader in the clubhouse and the final two hours proved to be a nerve-wrecking experience for all. One by one the scores were posted and there was a final cheer when she realized her dream of winning the 2009 4A State Title. Her teammate Brax McCarthy tied for 16th place shooting a 149 in the Boys Division. Both Chelsea and Brax will return next year.

“It was a great ride home and one of the best experiences of my life,” said Coach Bates.
