HAZEL HARVEY PEACE ES GROUNDBREAKING
Fort Worth, TX – The Fort Worth ISD broke ground for the Hazel Harvey Peace Elementary School on Wednesday, May 27, 2009. This is the first new school to be built under the 2007 voter-approved bond package.
Hazel Harvey Peace was a legendary figure whose forty-nine year career at I.M. Terrell High School involved teaching, coaching, counseling and serving as dean of girls. She touched the lives of thousands of students, teachers, administrators and others who knew her.
Special guests at the ceremony included Kervin Carter, Executor of Mrs. Peace’s estate, members of the I. M. Terrell Alumni Association and former staff and faculty members from Terrell HS.. Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Bob Ray Sanders delivered a tribute to Mrs. Peace. Deputy Superintendent Walter Dansby presented a plaque to the alumni association in recognition of their support for naming the school after Mrs. Peace.
The SWHS Jazz Band provided music entertainment while several elementary students, representing the first “graduating” class, distributed commemorative programs and helped wield shovels when the earth was turned. The Wedgwood Middle School Junior Cadet Corps presented the colors.
Remarks marking the occasion were offered by Board Of Education President Ray Dickerson, Superintendent Melody Johnson and Chris Hatch, Trustee for District 6.
Actual construction will begin very soon on the $12,043,481 project. Completion is anticipated for spring of 2010.
