FWISD TRANSITION CAMPS GIVE STUDENTS A HEADSTART

Fort Worth, Texas – Yes, it’s still early summer. But for incoming Fort Worth ISD 6th and 9th graders spending a few days at a Transition Camp could make all the difference when classes resume.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Fort Worth ISD is holding Transition Camps for all new middle school and freshman students. New 7th graders entering middle school after a year at a 6th Grade Center are also eligible. Transition Camps allow students to become comfortable with their new school surroundings while boosting their skills in math and science.

Transition Camps are free, generally run for five days and the District provides transportation to and from the camps, as well as snacks and lunches each day the camps are in session. This year the Camps will run from August  3rd through August 22nd, depending on the individual campus.

Chuck Boyd, the District’s Assistant Superintendent for Secondary School Leadership, says the transition camps are an opportunity for the students to get together before the school year starts, meet their teachers and see the school.

“We want to show them what we expect of them over the school year, and in turn what they can expect out of us,” said Mr. Boyd. “The camps have three goals. Academically there is interdisciplinary approach to math and science. Socially we want the new students to begin to assimilate at their new campuses and make new friends. Lastly, students can learn the campus culture.”

The District is confident that the camps can be an important tool to boost student attendance and academic performance.

“Based on the mid year numbers, we can see that the students who attended the high school transition camp last year had higher grades and fewer absences than average,” Mr. Boyd says.
