More Fort Worth ISD Schools Rated As High-Performing
Fort Worth, Texas – The Texas Education Agency (TEA) rates fifty-five Fort Worth ISD schools as exemplary or recognized for the 2008-2009 school year. This is a sixty-two percent increase in the number of high performing schools compared to 2007-2008. TEA reports FWISD has:
· 12 Exemplary schools
· 43 Recognized schools
· 49 Academically Acceptable schools
These results, as well as scores in all tested content areas, point to a dramatic upturn in academic performance for Fort Worth ISD campuses.
At the District level, Reading, Writing and Social Studies scores for all student groups are at Recognized level.
In Science, at the District level, all student groups performed at the Acceptable level or above, with increases ranging from 2 to 9 percentage points.
· Science saw significant gains (+12% points) for African-American elementary school students who went from 59% passing in 2008 to 71% passing in 2009. Also at the elementary level, All Students, Hispanic and Economically Disadvantaged student groups each gained 9 to 10 percentage points from 2008 to 2009.
· Middle school saw significant gains in science scores for African American students (+9% points), Hispanic students (+4% points), Anglo students (+2% points) and Economically Disadvantaged students (+5% points.)
· The greatest gains among high school students in Science were +12% points in Grade 11 Economically Disadvantaged students and +10% points in Grade 11 for African American students.
In Mathematics, at the District level, all student groups performed above the Acceptable level with significant gains across the board.
· The greatest gain in middle school math was for African-American students in grade 8 (+7% points increasing from 57% in 2008 to 64% in 2009.)
· In high school, there were significant gains from 2008 to 2009 at 9th and 11th grade with the greatest gains in Grade 9 for the African-American (+11% points), Economically Disadvantaged (+10% points) and Hispanic (+9% points) students.
While 12 schools are projected to be rated academically unacceptable, all of these schools have shown significant gains in many, if not all, tested content areas and in all student groups. In fact, Arlington Heights and Dunbar High Schools achieved acceptable status in all academic areas but are rated as unacceptable solely because the state ratings include the school completion rate for the class of 2008.
“The rankings this year are a much more accurate picture of the progress districts and schools are making,” said Superintendent Melody Johnson. “We don’t base our instruction on rating however. We look at the bigger picture of subject matter performance at each campus and individual student progress.”
