SUMMARY: The 2009 Fort Worth ISD Adult Basic Education GED Graduation will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The event will be held in the auditorium of I.M. Terrell Elementary School. The guest speaker will be Fort Worth ISD Board of Education Representative for District 8 and Board Treasurer Juan Rangel.
The graduation will bring to 354 the total number of students who received GED Certificates in the 2008-2009 school year. Tonight’s group of sixty-six graduates helps boost the completion rate by 15% over the prior school year.
Some of the future plans for these students attending the ceremony include: three plan to enter the military, forty-three expect to enter college; and seventeen are employed or seeking employment.
Reaching this milestone has been a challenge for several students. The following are a few examples of special situations students have experienced or overcome in order to achieve their GED:
· The student speaker for Tuesday night will share her story of the difficulties that she experienced when she was limited in her English speaking ability. She has since earned her US citizenship, and has also completed medical coding school.
· A very proud graduate who is Native American from the Choctaw Nation had been out of school for over 30 years. Upon completing his GED, he entered and completed training and is now a certified radiology technician in the state of Texas.
· One student is from the Congo and contracted meningitis right before she was to graduate from high school. As a result she was paralyzed for 6 months, after 2 operations and a year of therapy she could finally walk again. She completed her GED in 3 years; which is remarkable, since French is her first language. She is currently seeking employment and is planning to attend Tarrant County College.
· One family will be celebrating the achievements of both mother and daughter. Both have completed their GED this year.
