SUMMARY: The Fort Worth ISD’S Southwest Academy of Petroleum Engineering & Technology will formally open on Monday August 17, 2009. Ceremonies get underway at 11:30 a.m.

The Academy will be a “school within a school” at Southwest High School and is the first academy of its type in the North Texas area.

The Southwest Academy of Petroleum Engineering and Technology is a unique opportunity for a limited number of students to gain perspective and insight in the engineering, energy and petroleum fields through a partnership with the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA). This collaboration will bring young professionals from these fields to the classroom and allow students to work side by side with professionals in the various fields of study.

“This academy offers our students first-hand testimonies from those who work in these career areas,” said FWISD Superintendent Melody Johnson. “When they graduate, these students will be fully prepared for continued study or for direct entry into these fields of work.”

The Academy is limited to fifty (50) incoming freshman this school year (2009-2010).
