FWISD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AWARDED AGRICULTURAL GRANT

Fort Worth, Texas – Fort Worth ISD’s E.M. Daggett Elementary School is one of only eight schools in Texas to receive an Urban Schools Agriculture Grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture. Daggett ES will receive $2,500 for the garden project.

E.M. Daggett Elementary students will plan and maintain a garden bed to learn about plant and soil characteristics and study plant life cycles. The project will help students learn basic agricultural concepts and aid in a better understanding of their environment and how they can play a part in saving it.

The Urban Schools Agriculture Grant teaches students the role agriculture plays in their daily lives. Teachers use these projects to enhance science, math and writing programs at their schools. Previous projects have included a variety of school gardens, plant nurseries and raising farm animals.  Grants are made possible through donations from Borden Milk Products and Kitchen Craft.

Coincidentally, Daggett Elementary School is celebrating its centennial anniversary beginning in November, 2009. A committee of parents, staff, alumni and interested citizens has been hard at work since last year planning the event.

The celebration will be highlighted by a week-long observance that will include patriotic, art, dance and historical programs. A preliminary agenda is included at the conclusion of this news release.
