FWISD STUDENTS JOIN GENERATION HOPE
Fort Worth, Texas – Students from four Fort Worth ISD schools will benefit from the generosity of the Generation Hope Laptop Program. Generation Hope is a three year program that provides a laptop computers and structured curriculum to students from school districts co-located in the precinct served by Tarrant County Commissioner Roy Brooks.
Commissioner Brooks established the program to honor his late parents. The Marion J and Marie N. Brooks Fund targets incoming sixth grader students in the Fort Worth, Crowley and Everman ISDs.
Participating Fort Worth schools include:
· McLean 6th Grade Center
· Dunbar 6th Grade Center
· Glencrest 6th Grade Center
· Handley Middle School
Since this is the first year of the program, student selection was determined by each student’s fifth grade teacher and counselor. Students “earn” ownership over the laptops through a point system that includes:
· Attending after school and Saturday classes
· Participating in designated field trips
· Writing to pen pals from areas identified by Fort Worth Sister Cities International
· Community service
Parents are vital links in this program and must agree to the Laptop User Agreement. The online activities of all students will be monitored and students will be able to create personal blogs about their experiences.
Other organizations participating and assisting with sponsorship are Texas Wesleyan University, the University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Christian University, Irving Independent School District, AT&T, Intel Corporation, Kedar I.T., Lockheed Martin, M&A Technology and Samaritan House.
