FWISD STUDENTS MAKE UNPRECEDENTED GAINS IN 2010 TAKS
Three High Schools and 6 Middle Schools Project Recognized Status
50 Campuses Project Recognized or Exemplary Status
Fort Worth, Texas – Students in the Fort Worth Independent School District have made unprecedented gains in the most recent administration of the Texas TAKS tests. And, for the first time since TAKS testing began, it’s projected that three Fort Worth ISD high schools – Carter-Riverside HS, Trimble Technical HS, and Paschal HS – and six middle schools will receive a Recognized rating.
In fact, there are many areas of double-digit gains in some of our most challenged areas of tested content, including math and science. In a year in which the benchmark rose, the District anticipates at least 50 schools will be designated as Recognized or Exemplary.
“This is a big payoff for several years of hard work,” said Superintendent Melody Johnson of the gains on the state accountability testing. “We are going green in a different way; we’re looking at a ‘sea of green’ on the preliminary TAKS results charts.”
Dr. Johnson referenced the fact that the color green is used to notate statistically significant gains in the different content and grade level cells on the TAKS results spread sheet.
· In elementary school, exiting 5th graders in the All Students group exceeded the Recognized (80%) level in Reading, Mathematics and Science.
· In middle school, exiting 8th graders scored at the Recognized (80%) level in Reading and Social Studies. All student groups made statistically significant gains in 8th grade Science.
· For exiting 11th graders, Exemplary performance or double-digit gains were seen for all student groups in Mathematics and Science in high school. All student groups scored at the Recognized or higher level in Reading.
All of these results are particularly gratifying because changes this year in the state accountability system made the achievement of Recognized status much harder to attain.
Previously Fort Worth ISD reported that seniors who took the April 2010 TAKS re-test made significant gains when compared to April 2009. More seniors passed TAKS and were able to graduate since TAKS testing began. Some schools, like Polytechnic High School, had a 97% graduation rate, the best in the school’s history.
