Fort Worth ISD Students ‘Read 2 Win’ In New Program

Program Targets Young Readers, Pairs Them with Volunteer Mentors from Local Churches

The Fort Worth ISD and Tarrant NET kicked off the the Read 2 Win campaign, a community collaboration that pairs community volunteers with first-grade students who are learning to read.

The inaugural event was held on Thursday, October 11, at Davd K. Sellars Elementary School where mentors and students demonstrated Read 2 Win tutoring techniques in the school’s atrium.  For the 2012-13 school year, more than 300 volunteers will focus on 25 elementary schools and recruit reading mentors for 250 first grade students.

Additionally, Jeff Sanders and Sultan Cole of Tarrant NET appeared on WFAA/News 8 on October 13 to talk about the program with news anchor David Schechter.

Research shows if a child is not reading at grade level by third grade the chances of catching up are very slim. Starting in October, volunteers will read to first-grade students for at least a half-an-hour a week. They will be trained and tools – phonics cards, sight word sheets – will be provided.  But the most important contributions will be their time and attention.

Read 2 Win will:

  • Partner a church and volunteers with an elementary school
  • Train and deploy 1,000 volunteer reading mentors over the next 5 years
  • Concentrate efforts on first-graders

The strategy is simple but can be a powerful tool to help children learn to read so they can be successful in all other content areas.
