House adjourns with no action on school mandates bill

The Texas House adjourned for a four-day Easter weekend break shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday without taking up a bill to raise the size of kindergarten through fourth-grade classes and give school districts greater flexibility to fire and cut pay to teachers and other staff.

Other business kept House members busy before the scheduled 1 p.m. adjournment.

The House returns Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Public Education Committee expects House Bill 400 to be considered Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on how much other House business will be conducted early next week. Extensive debate is expected on the bill.
