Sunrise-McMillan Participates in NAWIC Education Foundation Block Kids Program
The Sunrise-McMillan After School Program kicked off the year with the NAWIC Education Foundation Block Kids Program. The Block Kids Program is a national building program competition that is sponsored on the local level by NAWIC chapters and other organizations. The award-winning program introduces children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of, and to promote an interest in, future careers in one of the many facets of the industry.

For each session, a guest speaker from the construction industry came out to talk to the students about their particular field of work. The competition itself involves the construction of various structures using interlocking blocks, a small rock, string, foil, and a poster board. The students had a maximum of one hour to use the blocks and selected items to build a project that would normally be built by the construction industry.

Upon completion, their project was judged. Students had to explain why they chose to build their specific project, what they liked about it, what they would change, if anything, and how it could be used.
