Mary Louise Phillips Elementary will receive a $2,500 donation from Big Lots at a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for Friday, June 15.

Principal Patty Cote says the money will be used to reinstate the school's "Book of the Month" program, which was eliminated this school year due to a lack of funding.

In past years, Mrs. Cote chose a book every month that addressed a character trait that is important for children to possess or an issue that children commonly face. The book was then given to each class in the building, accompanied by a letter from the principal.

Here's an example from April 5, 2010:

Dear Friends,

In the April Book of the Month, Enemy Pie by Derek Munson, the main character struggles with a situation that many of you might have found yourself in at some point. When he does not know how to best deal with this problem, he seeks the advice of his father in an attempt to rid himself of his enemy Jeremy Ross.

At the end of the book, our main character does rid himself of his enemy but in an unexpected way. In response to this story, I would like for you to compose a letter about how you have dealt with someone you had a difficult time with. It might be a friend, a brother or sister, or even someone you didn’t know that well. I would like for you to explain the lesson the author wants each of us to learn from this book.

I look forward to reading your letters.

Mrs. Cote will be on hand to accept the donation at 8:45 a.m. on June 15. The event will be held at Ridgmar Square, 1255 Town Square Drive, Fort Worth, where the retailer is opening a new store.
