 School Health Advisory Council

Mission

The Fort Worth ISD (FWISD) School Health Advisory Council's (SHAC) mission is to promote sound school policies and practices that will improve and maintain the health and wellness of its students, faculty, and community members.

Vision

We envision a future where every child in Fort Worth has the opportunity to live a healthful lifestyle, to be health- and physically-educated, and to transfer that knowledge into action.

Goals

Support a healthy and safe school environment that fosters learning.

Healthy minds and bodies will be promoted through effective school health education and services.

Academic success will be achieved by empowering our faculty to model healthy behaviors.

Champion the practice of Coordinated School Health (CSH) by effectively implementing the eight components of CSH:

  •  Health education
  •  Counseling, Psychological & Social Services
  •  Physical education
  •  Healthy School Environment
  •  Health services
  •  Health promotion for staff
  •  Nutrition services
  •  Family/community involvement

 Purpose of the School Health Advisory Committee

The purpose of the School Health Advisory committtee is to advise the Board of Education on various subjects as they relate to the health of the students, parents, teachers, employees and community members of FWISD.

The Committee consists of Health/PE teachers, parents, community and business representatives. State law dictates the make-up of the committee:

(d) The board of trustees shall appoint members to the local school health advisory council. public school teachers;
public school administrators;
district students;
health care professionals;
the business community;

senior citizens;
the clergy; and
nonprofit health organizations.

The local school health advisory council's duties include recommending:

1) the number of hours of instruction to be provided in health education;

2) health education curriculum appropriate for specific grade levels that may include a coordinated health education program designed to prevent obesity, cardiovascular disease, and Type II diabetes through coordination of:

(A) health education;
(B) physical education;
(C) nutritional services;
