Like Dunbar High School, Dunbar Middle School is named after the great African-American poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar. The two schools also have the same mascot, the Wildcats, and the same colors, blue and white.

Dunbar Middle School is much newer, though. It was built in 1984. More than 450 7th and 8th graders are enrolled for 2007-2008.

The school’s motto is: “Vision 2010… Dunbar Middle is where it begins.” The school also has a mission - to provide students a quality education and every opportunity for success. Among those opportunities is the “21st Century Program.” The extensive before-and-after-school program offers homework assistance and tutoring, as well as activities such as arts and crafts, scrapbooking, robotics and fitness.
