Partner Spotlight
Students Soar to Success

Ready! Set! Fly! Fort Worth ISD partner, Lockheed Martin wanted Como Montessori students to be inspired by a true American hero, so they invited Vernice Armour, the first African-American Woman Combat Fighter Pilot, to their school.
Armour shared her message of going from “Zero to Breakthrough” with students. She spoke of “finding your passion,” and overcoming obstacles to achieve dreams, using her own life experiences and accomplishments as an example. She reinforced the importance of education, doing well in school, and making good decisions along the way. In a packed auditorium, her “It’s Breakthrough Time in 2009!” message resonated in the hearts of the students!
“We are grateful to Lockheed Martin Leadership Association for providing this and other opportunities to our students and school community through the year as our Adopt-A-School partner.”

Speed Fab-Crete Challenges Forest Oak Students
Speed Fab-Crete employees Janis Petry, Dale Craig and Russ Bloxom shared their design and contractors story for “Career Day” to their “adopted” school this spring.
Speaking before 8th graders, they issued a 10-question pop quiz about the floor plan of a fire station currently under construction. Questions ranged from finding the weight room to determining total square feet of the equipment bays. Once students put their math skills to work and viewed the floor plan many quickly came up with the right answers.
Next, the group tried to stump students with a bonus question. Janis, Dale and Russ appeared wearing hardhats and asked “Which one is actually building the fire station?” All the students picked Janis…LAST! “We shared that appearances can be deceiving,” said Russ Bloxom. Some of the students were so impressed that they asked for Janis’ autograph. This proved to be another exciting day of breaking down walls and creating new pathways for student learning.
