2009 Red Ribbon Week
October 26-30th
Each year schools and communities join forces to recognize Red Ribbbon Week. Few people, however, know the reason behind Red Ribbon Week. Enrique Camarena was a well known DEA agent. He infiltrated drug trafficking groups and was successful in bringing them to justice. On February 7, 1985, Enrique was kidnapped, tortured and killed by drug traffickers.
Agent Camarena received numerous awards while with the DEA including the Administrator's Award of Honor, the highest award given by the DEA. Red Ribbon Week began in California in honor of Enrique's efforts and commitment to the war on drugs. This special week is set aside each year to bring awareness to drug prevention and to teach school children how to make healthy choices.
Schools within Fort Worth ISD have many activities planned for children. Whether it is wearing your cowboy boots to promote "Give Drugs the Boot" day or watching the DEA helicopter land at their school and listening to an agent speak, our children will have the opportunity to experience this important week.
