Welcome to Social Studies
-
The FWISD Social Studies Department provides a rigorous, differentiated, and relevant social studies curriculum with standards-aligned resources and assessments that gives instructional support to all campuses through a renewed focus on teacher knowledge and best practices.
The Social Studies department supports the District's mission of "preparing all students for success in college, career and community leadership" by promoting
- student-centered classrooms where disciplinary literacy and thinking skills development is emphasized over rote memorization of ideas, events, people, and places;
- student investigations of primary and secondary sources that promote meaningful interactions and contribute to deeper understanding of the content across time, space, and cultures;
- the use of formative and summative assessments that accurately reflect student learning and guide instruction; and
- strategies to guide the development of reading, writing, and thinking skills.
