Degrees and Certifications:
Hello Woodway Families,
My name is Irene Garcia and I am very excited to introduce myself as the new principal of Woodway Elementary School. I am humbled and honored that I was chosen to lead such an amazing school and school community. I have heard nothing, but positive things about the students, teachers and parent community. My start on the job has been welcoming and enthusiastic, and I already feel like I am part of the Woodway Family. I come to you with 28 years of experience as an educator from Los Angeles County in California, in particular Baldwin Park Unified School District in Baldwin Park, California. Although my years of experience are from California, I am a Native Texan. I was born and raised in Abilene, Texas, graduated from Abilene High School, earned my Bachelor’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas and earned my first teaching assignment as a first-grade teacher in Irving ISD. My immediate family reside in Abilene, Texas, and I have extended family all through-out Texas and the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex area. I am happy to be back in my home state of Texas. In my 28 years of experience, I have had the privilege to develop various skills sets that have prepared me to be a school leader. I spent my first 14 years as a classroom teacher in first, third, and fifth grades. I have taught in two-way dual language programs and structured English Immersion settings. I also spent five years as an instructional coach and resource teacher, by where my primary role was to support teachers in their professional growth and improve students’ performance levels in all academic areas. My most recent role has been as Principal of Geddes Elementary School in Baldwin Park, California for the past eight years, where I have grown and developed into the leader I am today. I bring these years of experience to Woodway Elementary School, and look forward to leading our staff achieve our mission, vision, and school goals. I wholeheartedly believe that great schools are the result of great teachers and my primary goal is to continue to support the teachers of Woodway Elementary School and to provide them with the tools they need to continue to be successful and help your children learn, grow and prosper. I am thrilled about this school year and look forward to working with Assistant Principal Danette Kirvin to ensure that the students of Woodway have a school year filled with high quality instruction, meaningful learning experiences, embed social and emotional safety, and include fun into our learning environment. I look forward to meeting our families and want to encourage parents to get involved with our school PTO, by where we will work together to ensure we are meeting our school goals, increase parent engagement, parent involvement, and focus on our student’s achievement goals. To conclude, please remember that my door is always open to you. I sincerely welcome your conversation and input during this year. Let us keep our students the primary focus of our work. I can’t wait to celebrate our collective successes during the 2021-2022 school year.
Thank you, Ms. Garcia, Principal
