Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata Hosts First Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council

Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata gathered around 40 high school students from across the district to his first Superintendent Student Advisory Council (SSAC) meeting at the District Service Center.

The purpose of the SSAC is to ensure students have a direct voice in district decision making, and to elevate the student perspective to district leaders. The group is made up of representatives from each FWISD high school and meets quarterly.

By hosting the meeting in-person, students received face-to-face time with the superintendent and engagement among their peers. At the May meeting, students got to get to know each other, Dr. Licata, and cabinet-level staff.

As part of his commitment to student-centered problemsolving, Dr. Licata updated students on issues that matter to them, such as off-campus lunch. The meeting lasted almost two hours, during which the superintendent had a question and answer session with students addressing concerns on their campuses.

The students came prepared with feedback on campus safety, testing, and how they can be more involved in decision making.

“I appreciate the thoughtful dialog the students brought to the table,” Dr. Licata said. “It is clear they are passionate about their schools and are invested in bringing about positive change. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the advisory council in the future.”
