Board of Education

Board Room Header

As of March 24, 2026, the Texas Education Agency’s Commissioner of Education temporarily suspended the powers and authority of the Fort Worth ISD Board of Trustees. While Board of Trustee members will continue to be elected during the appointed term of the Board of Education, elected Board of Trustee members will continue to have their power and authority suspended until the Commissioner of Education begins the transition back from the Board of Education to the Board of Trustees.

From their founding in 1882, the public schools were operated by the Fort Worth city government. In 1925, however, the Texas Legislature removed the city's authority and created the Fort Worth Independent School District, as we know it today, to manage and operate the schools.

Fort Worth ISD is governed locally through an appointed Board of Managers. Nine board members collectively represent the entirety of Fort Worth ISD, hold public board meetings, and adhere to the same legal requirements and obligations as the elected Board of Trustees. This includes holding all meetings in public, allowing for public comment, holding public hearings, and posting all required budget and tax information for public review and discussion. A policy-making body, the Board delegates the day-to-day administration of the schools to the Superintendent and the professional staff.org/board

Major responsibilities of the Board:

  • to govern and oversee the management of the school District
  • to set the policies for the Fort Worth ISD
  • to adopt an annual budget and tax rate for each fiscal year
  • to select and evaluate the superintendent of schools
  • to foster good community relations
