David Orona
Art Teacher at Manuel Jara Elementary
David Orona, an art teacher at Manuel Jara Elementary, followed his passion for art after retiring from a career in advertising. After years of working in the creative industry, he pursued his dream of becoming an educator and has since inspired countless students to express themselves through art.
In Mr. Orona’s classroom, art becomes a way for students to connect with their heritage. Each year during Hispanic Heritage Month, his students create papel picado and paintings (traditional and festive Mexican decor made of paper) that reflect their cultural pride. Since most of his students are Hispanic, these activities foster a sense of belonging and celebration year-round, not just in the classroom, but in their lives.
Mr. Orona believes that art has the power to uplift both individuals and communities. Beyond the classroom, he uses his artistic talents to give back by painting murals that brighten local neighborhoods. His commitment to service extends beyond his own work; he encourages the wider community to get involved.
He urges parents, families, and community members to volunteer their time, become more involved in the students’ lives, and help shape the next generation. By fostering relationships between the school and community, he believes that students benefit from the support of many hands and hearts.
In Mr. Orona’s classroom, art becomes a way for students to connect with their heritage.
Mr. Orona’s mission is not only to inspire students to take pride in their culture and express themselves through art but also to encourage the community to be of service. He hopes that through art and engagement, everyone can play a role in empowering young minds.
