Retirement Information

• All fulltime employees are members of TRS. If you are nearing retirement, you should contact TRS at least six months prior to your anticipated retirement date to allow enough time to complete and submit all required forms. TRS has made it easier to plan for retirement and access your TRS information. To register, visit the MyTRS website. 
   
• After establishing a user ID and password of your own choosing, members can plan for retirement, keep track of their personal accounts and receive communications from TRS online. Registering for MyTRS will be very useful as you are going through the retirement process. Visit the TRS Planning for Retirement webpage to read about planning your retirement with TRS.

TRS Retirement Eligibility Requirements

Call TRS at 1-800-223-8778 to make sure you are eligible to retire.

• Log in to the MyTRS website and request a retirement estimate and packet. OR
• Complete a Request for Estimate of Retirement Benefits TRS18   and mail to:

  • Spanish version: Solicitud de estimacion de beneficios de jubilacion.

• Review the information carefully. Ensure that all necessary forms are completed. Send all forms to TRS.  
  
  OR
   
• Contact TRS for assistance with completing all necessary forms. Assistance can be provided over the phone or in person by appointment. 

Complete a Form-100 here. 

• Retirement notifications are requested to be submitted 60 calendar days before the effective date of retirement so that the District may complete documents required by TRS for the employee's retirement application. 
   
• Verify/update your address in the ESS. The address information will be used to mail your W2.
   
• Print/download Payroll Advices and past W2s from ESS.

The FWISD Payroll Dept will submit the TRS 7 form (Notice of Final Deposit before Retirement Form) to TRS once your final paycheck has been processed. 

Retiring employees will lose FWISD network access the last day of their employment.

Before this day:

• Backup documents that you may need from your laptop.
   
• Login to ESS and download paycheck stubs and W2s.
   
• Verify/Update your address to receive your W2.

To earn a year of service credit for a school year, a member must:

• Work in a TRS-eligible position or receive paid leave from a TRS-eligible position for at least 90 workdays from September 1 through August 31 (the TRS school year
   
• In the school year in which a member retires, a year of service credit may be granted for completing the full fall semester with no unpaid leave or salary docks.  

FWISD allocates all leave to employees at the beginning of the calendar and as an employee works, their leave is earned. 

If an employee retires in December but has used more leave than they have earned, they will be in a dock status which can effect your retirement benefits.

If an employee does not fulfill the required number of workdays or find themselves in a dock status due to excessive leave usage, the employee may need to consider delaying their retirement date to ensure that all the necessary criteria for retirement and service credit have been met.
