Advanced Placement (AP)

What is AP?

AP courses are offered in the disciplines of arts, English, history and social science, math and computer science, the sciences, and world languages and culture. You should choose an AP course based on the subjects you’re passionate about and the classes you do well in.

AP courses are offered at all high schools and even some middle schools.

Can anyone take AP?

Yes! The AP Program believes that all motivated and academically prepared students should be able to enroll in AP courses. College Board strongly encourage all high schools to follow this principle.

Fort Worth ISD has a dedicated open enrollment policy. Any student who wishes to take AP can, as long as they commit to studying, completing their work, and taking the AP Exam for the courses they are enrolled in.

AP is for all students, but you should be ready.
You don’t need to be top of your class to be an AP student, but you’ll want to be prepared for the AP course you choose. Some AP classes have recommended courses you should take first, and all AP courses ask that you come willing to do your best work. Learn more about the most popular AP courses by grade.

Fort Worth ISD's AP Program

As the Advanced Placement program in Fort Worth continues to expand, the post secondary success coordinators with their high schools’ Advanced Placement teachers work to ensure that each course fits the framework of the College Board requirements.

Each school year, Advanced Placement teachers in Fort Worth ISD submit their syllabus to College Board auditors to be reviewed by College Board to ensure it meets their requirements .

By writing an aligned syllabus according to College Board guidelines, students are assured they will receive instruction equal to a college survey course while still in a supportive high school environment.

AP Exams and Scores

Fort Worth ISD automatically registers all students enrolled in AP classes for the corresponding AP Exam and covers the exam fee. Why? Because we want every student to have the opportunity to take the exam and earn college credit. There is no downside to taking the exam. The only thing a student misses by not taking the exam is an opportunity. All public higher education institutions in the State of Texas are required to accept qualifying AP exam scores (a score of 3 or better). Research has shown that some students won't register for exams because they assume they won't pass, so with our 100% registration policy, Fort Worth ISD ensures at lest every student has the opportunity.

It is important to note that colleges and universities do not know how a student did on an AP Exam unless they share their score from their College Board account. If you are interested in finding out which AP courses are accepted and for what classes they are accepted for,  you can search that through this link.

Support and Exam Preparation

FWISD has started offering city-wide study sessions again. Parents and students will be notified through their AP teachers and via email about when study sessions will happen to help students prepare for AP Exams. Be on the lookout for these emails. Study sessions are generally held in the spring.
