Fort Worth After School

For more than 20 years, Fort Worth After School (FWAS) has provided exceptional after-school enrichment opportunities for students across Fort Worth. Since its inception in the fall of 2000, FWAS has offered high-quality, structured programming designed primarily for students in grades 3–8, fostering academic growth, creativity, leadership, and personal development.

What began as a program serving 52 sites and approximately 2,300 students daily has expanded to 86 sites, now reaching more than 6,000 students each day. Participating campuses include both General Funded (FWISD/City of Fort Worth) sites and 21st Century Afterschool Centers on Education (A.C.E.) funded programs.

FWAS is a collaborative partnership between Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) and the City of Fort Worth, with generous support from the Rainwater Charitable Foundation and the Just Keep Livin Foundation. Together, these organizations make it possible to provide meaningful, engaging experiences that extend learning beyond the school day.

We invite community members, partners, and volunteers to join us in supporting a variety of exciting student-centered initiatives, including:

  • Road Warrior – Similar to a Soap Box Derby, students design and build cars using recycled and repurposed materials before competing at Derby Downs Park each spring.
  • Recycled Art Project – Students transform recycled materials into unique and imaginative works of art, showcasing both creativity and environmental awareness.
  • Mayfest – Students take center stage to demonstrate their talents through singing, dancing, musical performances, cheer routines, dramatic presentations, and more on the City of Fort Worth’s Rec & Roll Stage.
  • Pickleball Tournament – Participants compete against students from other FWISD after-school programs, demonstrating teamwork, athleticism, and sportsmanship.
  • Boat Regatta – Students work together to construct boats from cardboard, tape, and glue before putting them to the test in a fun-filled race at the CFW Forest Park Pool . While the boats may eventually sink, the excitement and teamwork make the experience unforgettable.
  • STEM Fair – Students engage in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics projects that encourage innovation, creativity, and critical thinking. Through interactive experiments and real-world problem-solving challenges, participants showcase their ideas and discoveries while developing skills that inspire future careers in STEM fields.

Over the past two decades, FWAS has provided countless opportunities for students to learn, explore, create, and grow. We take pride in our accomplishments and remain committed to delivering innovative, enriching, and rewarding experiences for generations of students to come.
