Youth Risk Behavior Survey
What is the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS)
The YRBSS is a system of surveys, it includes the national survey, called the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), conducted by the CDC that includes high school students from both private and public schools within the U.S. and it also includes surveys conducted by departments of health and education at the state, tribal, territorial, or local levels. The YRBSS measures health-related behaviors and experiences that can lead to death and disability among youth and adults. It includes students in grades 9 through 12 and assesses priority health-risk behaviors, including:
-
Injury and Violence
-
Substance use, including electronic vapor product and tobacco product use, alcohol use, and other drug use
-
Sexual activity
-
Bullying
-
Dietary behaviors
-
Physical activity
-
Indicators of Mental Health
-
Obesity
-
Social media and screen time
The results of the YRBS helps to monitor health trends, identify emerging issues, and plan and evaluate programs that can help improve adolescent health. The YRBS was designed in cooperation with Federal agencies and numerous state and local departments of education and public health and is conducted biennially in odd-numbered years.
