Military-Connected Students
Who Are Military-Connected Students?
Military-connected students are defined as students with a parent on active duty or on full-time or part-time National Guard or Reserve Duty in the armed forces (Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard).
Texas has one of the largest populations of military‑connected students in the country, with nearly 230,000 enrolled in public and open‑enrollment charter schools across the state. Every Texas school region serves students from military families, many of whom experience frequent moves, often 6 to 9 times throughout their K–12 years. About 30% of these students are between the ages of 6 and 11, navigating both early childhood development and the unique challenges of military life. Research shows that children from military families are twice as likely as their civilian peers to join the Armed Forces as adults, highlighting the lasting influence of their upbringing and community.
