Multi-Tiered System of Supports
Our MTSS Values and Vision
MTSS encompasses academic, behavioral, and mental health supports for all students. At the heart of our mission is a core set of shared 5 values that serve to ground and enliven our collective identity and strengthen our commitment to our mission as educational leaders. The foundation of success for our students and our school system is rooted in our core values, and these values define how FWISD serves our students:
FWISD believes a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Framework will help us achieve our school and community's commitment to the mission to prepare ALL students for success in college, career, and community leadership.
2. MTSS is a problem-solving and prevention model with strong evidence of success.
3. MTSS uses data to inform academic and behavioral instruction and intervention based on individual student needs. Our commitment is to provide a series of coordinated systems and structures that, when implemented with fidelity and rooted in our district's instructional core, result in positive benefits for students.
4. Our goal for our students: The MTSS framework allows our students to be known, respected and supported across the diversity of their learning needs, to achieve success in their academics, personal relationships, and future endeavors.
5. Our goal for our educators: Educators will use the MTSS Handbook to support all students effectively, easily and efficiently. We aim to streamline the collection and documentation of observations in student data, as well as the planning and reporting process required for differentiation and intervention. In doing so, we can enable our teachers to spend more time building relationship with their students, delivering personalized support, and experiencing professional success.
Center on Multi-Tiered System of Supports
MTSS is a proactive and preventative framework that integrates data and instruction to maximize student achievement and support students social, emotional, and behavior needs from a strengths-based perspective. Best practices for an MTSS framework should include universal screening, evidenced-based practices done with fidelity, progress monitoring, and data-based decision making.
Well functioning instructional practices should have high quality Tier 1 which includes research-based curriculum, includes all students (English learners, special education, gifted and talented, etc.) small groups, differentiation, scaffolding, and accommodations. Tiers 2 and 3 should use evidence based interventions and supplement Tier 1. Fidelity of MTSS implementation is critical throughout Tiers 1, 2, and 3. Campus level MTSS teams review and use instructional data combined with staff member expertise to make decisions with the students’ best interests in mind to aligning instruction and support, to match individual student needs.
