Teaching Substitute
Daily Rate of Pay For Substitute Teachers:
$110.00 with a minimum of a High School Diploma
$120.00 with a minimum of 60 college credit hours
$130.00 with Bachelor’s Degree and above
$135.00 with valid teachers certification from TEA
$140.00 for retired FWISD teachers
EXTRA HELP - All jobs coded "Extra Help" will be paid $110.00
Substitute Teachers not on a long-term assignment will also receive an increase in pay for working in a classroom as the teacher of record on certain days of the week:
Monday additional $5 per day
Thursday & Friday additional $10 per day
Long-Term Pay :
Substitute teachers with a bachelor’s degree, working in a single classroom assignment past ten days, are eligible for an elevated daily rate of pay. This compensation shall remain at the higher rate of pay until such time as the substitute teacher changes or completes the assignment. If the substitute misses a day during the continuous assignment, then the rate will revert to the regular substitute daily rate for the next ten days. Non-degreed substitutes are not eligible for the higher rate of pay regardless of the number of days worked. Long-term substitute teachers who are used in other capacities will not be eligible to receive the higher rate of pay.
Certification Rate: Must hold a Texas Education Agency Teaching Certificate.
Substitutes are not paid for absences. An absence while working a long-term assignment (single assignment of 11 days or more) is cause for the higher rate of pay to end.
Substitutes who take a half-day assignment will be paid half of their daily rate of pay.
Requirements for Substitute Teachers
- Applicants must have at least a High School Diploma or GED and be able to submit an original transcript.
- Only U.S. citizens or aliens legally entitled to work in the United States are eligible for employment. Legal documents supporting eligibility to work must be provided at the time of hiring.
- Applicants must be available to work at least two (2) days per week.
Required Documents
- State Driver’s License or State Issued ID
- Social Security Card
- Completed Criminal Record Check Form
- For Substitute Teachers: An official transcript (Must be Original) listing a minimum of 60 college hours from an accredited college or university. (Transcripts must reflect all coursework. To qualify for the higher rate of pay, the transcript must show the conferred Bachelor's Degree. All foreign transcripts must be equivocated, course by course, through an approved agency.) If your institution provides Escripts, please have them email it to us directly at substitutes@fwisd.org.

Auxiliary Substitute
Daily Rate of Pay For Substitute Auxiliary Positions:
Clerk: $100 per day
Secretary: $100 per day
Teacher Assistant: $100 per day and $105 per day when working on a special education intensive assignment.
Clerk/Retiree: $105 per day
EXTRA HELP - All jobs coded "Extra Help" will be paid $100.00
Substitutes who take a half-day assignment will be paid half of their daily rate of pay.
Teachers Assistant Subs will also receive an increase in pay for working in a classroom on certain days of the week:
Monday additional $5 per day
Thursday and Friday additional $10 per day
Requirements for Substitute Auxiliary
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Required Documents
- State Driver’s License or State Issued ID
- Social Security Card
- Completed Criminal Record Check Form
- For Substitute Auxiliary: An official high school diploma from an accredited institution or G.E.D. certificate. (Must be Original)

Retirees
Daily Rate of Pay For Retired Substitute Teachers:
$140.00 for retired FWISD teachers (You must have retired from the FWISD to receive the retiree rate of pay)
Retired Substitute Teachers will also receive an increase in pay for working in a classroom as teachers on certain days of the week:
Monday additional $5 per day
Thursday and Friday additional $10 per day
Substitutes who take a half-day assignment will be paid half of their daily rate of pay.

As a retiree, it is of the utmost importance that you contact TRS to check your status prior to returning to work for the FWISD. It is a TRS requirement that all retirees must observe a one full, calendar-month break in all service with a TRS-covered employer after retirement and the retirement may be revoked if one works as a substitute during the required one full, calendar-month break in service (whether in the place of a current employee or if the position is vacant);.
