The varsity boys' basketball team tipped off their season on Friday at Dallas Molina and played at home vs Bridgeport on Saturday.

We did not get the result we wanted on Friday night to start off our 2023-24 campaign with a 49-39 loss to Molina on the road.  After battling back to take a 1-point lead late in the third quarter, the Cougars failed to keep the Jaguars of Molina off the offensive glass in the 4th quarter, giving up 19 points in the final quarter of play.  Down by 5 with 2 minutes to go, the comeback attempt was not enough to overcome the deficit.  Senior John Lewark led the Cougars with 12 points.  Senior Stephun Williams tossed in 8 points and 5 rebounds in the defeat.

On Saturday, the Cougars showed some great toughness and bounced back with a 61-23 victory over Bridgeport at home.  The Cougar pressure defense forced 33 turnovers and held the Bulls to 5 points in each of the last three quarters.  It was a total team effort, and I was very happy with how our boys responded after facing some adversity the night before.

Lyndon Ellis had 13 points and 5 steals.

Corey Williams had 4 points and 2 assists.

Jaylen James had 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals.

Malik El-Amin had 12 points and 2 steals.

John Lewark had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 1 charge.

We travel to Poly tomorrow night (7:30 pm) and play at home on Friday vs. RL Turner (7:30 pm).  Come support if you can.  Go Cougars!

  • JV - Weekend Update

Posted by Coach Rieder on 11/12/2023

Your Cougar JV Basketball team played 2 games this weekend and are off to a great start at 2-0.  On Friday, we traveled to Dallas Molina to kick off our regular season and came away with a convincing 67-21 victory.  The young Cougars once again opened the game with a stifling full-court press that led to a 12-0 lead and kept the pressure on the entire game, even after backing off to a half-court man-to-man defense.  On the offensive end, the boys played unselfishly and were led by Robert Jones with 17 points and Patrick Shephard with 14.  Tristen Foster and Jamarion Armstead also contributed 8 points a-piece and newcomer, Grayson Ehirim, contributed 6.  On the defensive end, Trenell Patterson, Lennox Stcyre and Blake Davis used their length and quickness to force many Molina turnovers that led to easy transition baskets.

On Saturday morning, Bridgeport came to Western Hills and ran into that same full-court pressure defense that allowed your cougars to jump out to an early lead that led to a 51-37 victory.  The Cougar bench helped hold Bridgeport to only 2 second quarter points, which allowed us to build an 11 point lead.  The 2nd half saw more of the same to hold off any threat.  Offensively, Patrick Shephard led the scoring with 17 points, Tristen Foster had 13 and Percy Luvert chipped in 8 points.  Defensively, Trenell Patterson and Robert Jones used their quickness to force turnovers.  Off the bench, De'Anthony Monroe and Jamarion Armstead helped maintain the defensive pressure.

Our next game is Tuesday at Polytechnic and then back home Friday against RL Turner.  Come on out and see the boys play.

In last night’s scrimmage against Northside, your Cougar JV basketball team used a stifling full-court press to jump out to a 16-0 lead that resulted in a 45-15 win.  When we hit a little lull, Tristan Foster was a sparkplug off the bench, hitting 3 3-pointers to get us going again.  Offensively, the Cougars were led by Tristan with 13 points and Patrick Shepherd with 12 points.  Defensively, Trennell Patterson and Percy Luvert led a total team effort in shutting down the Steers.

Your Cougars are back in action again on Friday night at Dallas Molina, followed by a home game against Bridgeport on Saturday.  Congratulate them on a great game and wish them well this weekend.

The varsity boys' basketball team hosted North Side in their final scrimmage on Tuesday night.  The Cougars played 3 quarters due to referee time constraints and came away with the 49-22 victory.  After a sluggish start, the Cougars were able to turn it on in the second quarter to start pulling away.  A stifling defensive effort in the third quarter led to a 16-2 run for Western Hills which sealed the deal.

Senior Stephun Williams led the Cougars with 18 points.  Senior Malik El-Amin tossed in 9 points and Senior John Lewark added 8 points in the win.  Juniors Jaylen James, Brandon Hawkins, Stefon Holman, and Senior Corey Williams provided a lot of energy and defensive presence in the victory.

The Cougars tip-off their season at Dallas Molina on Friday, November 10th at 7:30 pm.  We will play at home the following day, on November 11th at 12:30 pm vs. Bridgeport.  Come out and catch some Saturday Hoops if you can.  Go Cougars!

Good morning, Cougar Nation.  Hoops season is here! Boys' basketball opened their season with a three-team scrimmage on Saturday morning.  JV played 25-minute running clock games and the varsity played 30-minute running clock games for the scrimmage format.

The JV team got the day started with a big win over Joshua.  Patrick Shephard and Trenell Patterson sparked the offense by making several steals on the defensive end that resulted in some easy transition points.  They had a tough loss in game 2 to Dallas Bryan Adams, but showed several positives.  Tristen Foster, Lennox Stcyre, and Percy Luvert also played well by making some outside shots and good passes.

The varsity team started game one with a 34-19 win over Joshua.  The Cougar defensive pressure was stifling early.  Senior Malik El-Amin converted on two defensive steals on back-to-back possessions to get the game started.  The Cougars never looked back from that point on.  Senior Stephun Williams led the Cougars with 7 points.  Senior John Lewark knocked down 2 3's to end with 6 points.  Junior Brandon Hawkins provided energy coming off the bench and contributed 4 points.  Senior Xavier McIntyre also added 5 points and several rebounds in the victory.

In game 2, the Cougars got down early to a physical and well-sized Bryan Adams team, but showed some grit and battled back to tie the game late with one minute to go.  We had an opportunity to win it with a game winning free throw with .4 sec left in the game, but we fell short.  The Cougars dropped the second game by one point with a score of 25-24.  It was a great learning opportunity for us.  Senior Stephun Williams led us in scoring again with 7 points.  Seniors John Lewark and Malik-El Amin also added 6 points each.  Juniors Lyndon Ellis and Jaylen James and senior Corey Williams played great defense and had several deflections and steals.

The Varsity and JV teams scrimmage FW North Side here tomorrow night at 5:30 and 6:30 pm.  We hope to see you in attendance.  Have a great week and go Cougars!

  • Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball Visit

Posted by Coach Dunson on 10/13/2023

This afternoon, the Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball Team visited our gym for a quick workout and shared some words of wisdom with our boys' and girls' basketball teams.

My former coach, Brennen Shingleton, along with his players, stressed the importance of making the right decisions off the court, how being a good teammate translates to being a good employee, and the importance of competing in everything in life. Our players asked great questions and really enjoyed seeing the collegiate pace of play and hearing from players that come from similar backgrounds.

This morning, a few of our Cougar Basketball Seniors greeted the Tigers of Waverly Park Elementary.  We had a blast seeing their smiling faces.  A few players even took part in foot races to the front entrance doors!  It was a great reminder that our positive influence can have a lasting impact on those around us.
