Mrs. Monica Granados

It is a genuine pleasure to lead and collaborate with the Riverside Community at Natha Howell Elementary. Being a former Early Childhood teacher, a Literacy coach, and a current Administrator, I have great respect for this profession and believe that education improves people's quality of life by fostering innovative enterprises and inspirational leaders. I graduated from Texas Wesleyan University with a B.S. in Science and an M.Ed. in Elementary Education with a focus on leadership and PK–12 administration. My own individual learning experiences throughout my life and later at Wesleyan had a significant impact on my interests in research and education.

I realized early on a desire to follow a profession interacting with children and didn't think twice.  It is my philosophy that every child can learn and develop their strengths through instructional experiences.  Children develop into real scholars when presented with engaging instruction and challenging pedagogical practices.

A strong team and a clear vision are required for this; it cannot be accomplished alone. I consider it a pleasure to collaborate with a team that is committed and recognizes the favorable impact they have on our community. I have no doubt that, especially at the Elementary level, our focused effort and obvious dedication to providing high-quality education will have a significant impact on future graduates and their life decisions.

Ms. Rhea Smarz

Campus Data Leader

Alma Mater: Texas Wesleyan University

Degree: Masters in Education with a specialization in Mathematics

Certification: Generalist 1st through 8th Grades, specialization in Mathematics, ESL Endorsement

ROAR Success Criteria: It is my belief that all children can learn. I never regret a day in my life: good days give happiness, bad days give experience, the worst days give lessons, and the best days give us memories.

Biography: Hello, my name is Ms. Smarz and I am Campus Data Leader for Natha Howell Elementary School. I always wanted to be an educator, but I started out as a Hair Stylist to earn the money necessary to attend college.

After earning my Bachelor in Education from Texas Women’s University, I entered the education world to explore my passion for teaching children, English as a Second Language and mathematics. I was a classroom teacher for 12 years. During that time, I earned my Masters in Education with a specialization in math from Texas Wesleyan University.

Currently, I work as a Campus Data Leader for Fort Worth ISD, where I’m focused on mathematics, equity, and testing. I’ve spent the last thirteen years learning everything there is to know about being a data analyst—from student assessment, coaching teachers about data to monitoring our second language learners. I’m applying this knowledge in my role as Data Leader for Natha Howell Elementary, where I’m responsible for collaborating with teachers and administrators to align our strategy, schedules, and activities related to student assessments. For most people, data doesn’t sound very interesting. For me, collecting and analyzing complex data is a passion. I’ve been chasing this for 10 years. I would say I’m living the dream. During my free time, I spend ballroom dancing. My favorite dance of all is West Coast swing. I enjoy watching the Big Bang and am a Texas Ranger fan. I especially take joy in teaching my grandchildren to garden and thrill to see them carry-on the love of gardening.

ROAR Success Criteria: Each day at Natha Howell, I hope that all teachers come prepared with a sense of urgency and a set of high expectations for all students. I also hope that all students come prepared to meet and exceed those high expectations and enjoy their learning experiences along the way each day.

Biography- I have a passion for coaching and supporting teachers at all levels with all content areas. I tend to look forward to each new day, week, month, and school year to jumpstart the task of supporting teachers to support student growth. I am committed to this work because I believe that the effort and diligence that goes into creating consistency and engagement with student learning is worth it. The journey that teachers and students go on to discover, understand, practice, and persevere with new challenges is hard work, but I know that our students are worth it, and our team is up for the challenge.

When I’m not here at Natha Howell supporting our staff and students, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our kids and dogs, doing home improvement projects, cooking, reading, and gardening. Gardening might be my favorite thing to do with my family; I look forward to the time every winter when we can spread seeds and plant bulbs in our flower beds, and every spring when we get to see it all come to life.
