The FWISD Social Studies Department provides a rigorous, differentiated, and relevant social studies curriculum with standards-aligned resources and assessments that gives instructional support to all campuses through a renewed focus on teacher knowledge and best practices.
The Social Studies department supports the District's mission of "preparing all students for success in college, career and community leadership" by promoting
student-centered classrooms where disciplinary literacy and thinking skills development is emphasized over rote memorization of ideas, events, people, and places;
student investigations of primary and secondary sources that promote meaningful interactions and contributes to deeper understanding of the content across time, space, and cultures;
the use of formative and summative assessments that accurately reflect student learning and guide instruction; and
strategies to guide the development of reading, writing, and thinking skills.
