UIL Number Sense

Club Sponsor: Lauren Caldwell

  • Start Date: November

    Grade Levels: 4th-5th grades

Individuals are called upon every day to make decisions by using quick mental calculations. The development of these abilities should be an integral part of the math curriculum. Concepts covered include, but are not limited to: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, proportions, and use of mathematical notation. Fourth and fifth grade students that show serious interest in mathematics and the ability to "think on their feet" will be invited to join the UIL Number Sense team in November. They will learn math concepts that go beyond their current grade level. At the UIL competition in May, students will be given a 10-minute, fill-in-the-blank test which they must complete without doing calculations on paper or on a calculator.
