Fort Worth ISD News

The halls of Dolores Huerta Elementary School are always a little more colorful in September and October. Students and teachers come together to create projects celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and display them for the community.

The projects enhance the district’s continued commitment to literacy by focusing on a book. The classes read the book together and then complete a project and display for the museum. The community is invited to come judge displays in the museum and the PTA hosts a community night inviting families and neighbors to come see the museum.

Projects start as early as pre-K, such as coloring and decorating their own paper paletas after reading “Paletero Man.”

Teachers also use the museum to help students explore their own cultures and histories. After reading “My Two Border Towns” a Kindergarten class discussed their home countries and shared souvenirs.

In true museum fashion, students also explore history. Alongside the book “Sunflowers: Girasoles” a first grade class studied the history of sunflowers dating back 2600 B.C. in native Mexico.

After reading “Dulce Aroma: Historias de Pan y Esperanza” fourth grade teacher Ms. Cadena brought in her father, a baker, to teach the class about making pan dulce.

There was beautiful poetry, artwork, science experiments, and more at the annual museum. All of the students and staff did an outstanding job.
