Fort Worth ISD Unveils New Kid-Designed Playgrounds at Three Elementary Schools
Fort Worth ISD, in partnership with Challenge of Tarrant County and KABOOM!, debuted three new playgrounds at W.M. Green Elementary, C.C. Moss Elementary, and De Zavala Elementary. These playgrounds, designed by the students and built by community volunteers, represent a major step forward in advancing playspace equity in Fort Worth.
Prior to construction, students at each school had the opportunity to dream up their ideal playgrounds. Their drawings and ideas were incorporated into the final design, ensuring the new playspaces reflect the needs, aspirations, and creativity of the children they serve. The playgrounds officially opened with ribbon-cutting ceremonies following volunteer-led builds, where community members and students eagerly awaited the unveiling.
The collaboration with KABOOM! and Challenge of Tarrant County is part of a nationwide effort to address playspace inequity, ensuring that all children—regardless of race, background, or where they live—have access to safe and engaging places to play. “Playgrounds are an iconic part of childhood where kids collect some of their best memories and experience the countless physical and mental health benefits of play,” said Lysa Ratliff, CEO of KABOOM!.
Beyond the fun and games, these playgrounds serve as vibrant community hubs where relationships are built and nurtured. Jennifer Gilley, Executive Director of Challenge of Tarrant County, reflected on the significance of these spaces, saying, “This needs to be a place of health and wellness where parents come with their children. It’s a hub of the community.”
These playgrounds are more than just places to play—they are symbols of what is possible when communities come together to create joyful and supportive environments for children. Fort Worth ISD is proud to partner with organizations like KABOOM! to build a future where every child has access to a playground and the opportunity to thrive.
