Why it's important and how we use it
Research shows that the more time students spend reading, the better readers they become. But how can you create more time for reading without lengthening the school day? Achieve3000 can help by extending access to the products students already use to the home. Achieve3000’s solutions (Smarty Ants for grades K-1, KidBiz for grades 2-5, TeenBiz for grades 6-8, and Empower for grades 9-12) build key reading skills while developing knowledge and vocabulary.
Student reading levels are checked regularly and the lessons automatically change to the student’s reading level as they advance.
Students learn more than surface-level phonemic awareness and phonics – they dive deep and master these foundational reading skills. From letter identification and the alphabetic principle to comprehension skills, Smarty Ants transforms emergent readers into independent readers.
- Students master progressively more complex phonics skills as they learn to decode and encode phonemes, words, and stories
- Through skill-building games and activities, students learn approximately 1,500 vocabulary words, plus essential sight words
- A personal ant “coach” gives every student explicit instruction and kind feedback
(KidBiz, TeenBiz, and Empower)
Students need daily practice with text at their independent reading level to develop reading strategies and to provide access to grade-level content. Achieve3000’s exclusive 5-Step Literacy Routine is designed to build the skills for close reading of informational text with the explicit purpose of finding the evidence necessary to respond to a written prompt.
Students begin the routine by working with text at their independent reading level. While reading, they identify and incorporate evidence needed for a response to a Thought Question using Achieve3000’s Reading Connections and digital highlighting tool to annotate text. Research shows that when students complete on average two lessons per week, they can expect to more than double their expected Lexile gains, accelerating their readiness for high-stakes assessments.
Once students have acquired a base of knowledge by reading the Lexiled article, they progress to the Stretch version, which is written at grade level. This ensures that students get ample practice reading grade-level text, building the stamina and strength they need to read complex informational text and preparing them for the challenges of college and their chosen career.

What is Lexile?
A popular method used by schools to measure a student reader's ability is Lexile level or a Lexile Measure. A Lexile measure is a valuable tool for teachers, parents, and students. It serves two unique functions: it is the measure of how difficult a text is OR a student's reading ability level.
Getting kids reading as much as possible is important! However, many students will experience reading fatigue if they use Achieve3000 for too long on a daily basis.
