Dr. Rudy Rodriguez, a bilingual education pioneer in North Texas, is among the esteemed panelists taking part in the third annual Fort Worth ISD Dual Language Summer Conference.
The two-day event, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of FWISD’s bilingual education program, brings together pre-kindergarten to fifth-grade dual language teachers to discuss strategies for empowering English Learners to become bilingual, bicultural and biliterate. The conference, sponsored by FWISD’s Multilingual Program, will take place August 7 and 8 at the Region XI Education Service Center, 1451 S. Cherry Lane in White Settlement. All sessions for the conference are full, and registration is officially closed, according to conference organizers.
Dr. Rodriguez, who served as FWISD’s first bilingual/ English as a Second Language director from 1969 to 1973, will participate in a panel that brings together members who served in the District’s bilingual/ESL program over its 50-year history.
The year’s conference theme is “Reflecting on Our Past, Present and Future in Order to Continue Making a Difference.” Other conference speakers include Superintendent Kent P. Scribner and Jacinto “Cinto” Ramos Jr., FWISD Board of Education president.
“Reflecting on our bilingual program history enables us to honor our Fort Worth ISD’s commitment and role as a pioneer in North Texas,” said Xavier Vásquez, bilingual director of FWISD’s Bilingual/ESL Department. “When we filter our present day through the lens of the past, we avoid repeating missteps and we become determined in reproducing elements of our success. While our future may be uncertain, the spirit of our first co-laborers lives on in us.”
