Superintendent Message to Fort Worth ISD Graduating Seniors

Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Kent P. Scribner today released a video message directed specifically to graduating seniors, explaining more about the District’s decision to hold virtual graduations in June  Dr. Scribner’s message comes one day after Tarrant County and the State of Texas each reported their highest daily number of COVID-19 deaths to date.

While the District plans to celebrate the Class of 2020 in multiple ways this month, the Superintendent explained that the decision to hold only virtual graduation ceremonies was not an easy call.

“It was with profound disappointment that we decided to hold commencements virtually this spring,” Dr. Scribner said. “We can only imagine how it felt for you and your families to hear that news.”

There has been considerable passion involved in the community response, as was expected Dr. Scribner said.

“Some of you have let us know, and we hear your disappointment and passion. [However] some families have told us they would not feel safe attending, or even allowing their seniors to participate in, any large gatherings this spring.”

Dr. Scribner explained that the sheer number of graduation ceremonies in the Fort Worth ISD (more than 20) does not permit the kind of arrangements that are being attempted in much smaller districts.

However, Dr. Scribner did leave open the possibility of also considering options for a graduation celebration later this summer, if restrictions are further relaxed.

As announced earlier this week the Fort Worth ISD and each of its high schools plan to do everything possible to make this life event a memorable one for the Class of 2020 and their families.

The virtual graduation will allow students to share photos of themselves in cap and gown, as well as a personalized message.

A link to a special online platform will allow family and friends to join the online graduation from any location.

Additional information about the virtual graduations as well as plans to celebrate Fort Worth ISD seniors will be announced soon.
