FWISD, City Salutes Class of 2020

Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Kent P. Scribner and Mayor Betsy Price recently led the city in a salute to the District’s Class of 2020.

At 8:20 p.m. – 20:20 in military time – on Thursday, May 28, the District encouraged residents across Fort Worth to stand on their front lawns, porches and patios showing appreciation for FWISD’s 4,928 graduating seniors.

The Seventh Street Bridge, Pier 1 Building, and other city landmarks lit up in the District colors of “New Day Blue” and “Gold Seal Gold” to celebrate the accomplishments of FWISD’s 2020 class.

Some graduating seniors, dressed in their caps and gowns, gathered with their family and friends at the Seventh Street Bridge for the celebration. Others could be seen from sunroofs of vehicles celebrating the milestone. Motorists driving down West Seventh honked their horns to celebrate the graduating seniors and their accomplishments.

“This is a historic year. These students have overcome so many obstacles,” Dr. Scribner said. “ [This is] a great celebration of their resilience.

“We want them to know that the entire City of Fort Worth supports them through this difficult time and that they’re going to go on and do great things.”

Over at Arlington Heights High School, cheerleaders and band members led a small socially distanced group in the Senior Salute. Cars of well-wishers paraded past the campus celebrating the graduating seniors during the 20:20 salute.

“These kids and their parents and their teachers have found ways to make it very creative and very innovative, and I guarantee they won’t forget their graduation,” said Mayor Price, an Arlington Heights alumna. “I want them to know that community supports them. Everybody here – the business community are all here to support them.”

The District will celebrate the Class of 2020 with virtual graduation ceremonies on Saturday, June 20. Students may choose to participate in outdoor in-person celebrations June 19-26, following recent-issued TEA guidelines for such ceremonies. The District will follow CDC guidelines for social distancing.
