The Fort Worth ISD community gathered recently at W.J. Turner Elementary School to construct a student-designed playground to ensure students have a safe, inclusive place to play. This is part of a nationwide effort by KABOOM! to end playspace inequity – the reality that places to play are not available to every child, especially in communities of color. This project provides a state-of-the-art playground to more than 391 students – as well as their families and community members – each year.
Community members led the creation of the playground, from design to installation. See the project come to life in this video featuring some very happy kids!
In March, students from W.J. Turner Elementary shared drawings of their dream playspaces with project organizers. These ideas were integrated into the new playground design, which was decided after parents and community members provided feedback.
The new playground, intended for W.J. Turner’s youngest students, includes elements to promote play among students with disabilities and Too Small to Fail panels to encourage conversation among students and caregivers.
The school is also receiving a small putting green for its First Tee afterschool program, as well as a covered outdoor learning space in response to feedback from teachers and staff. Trees will be planted along Azle Avenue this fall to provide beauty and act as a sound barrier between the busy street and the playground.
The mission of W.J. Turner Elementary is to create a safe, challenging, and inspiring learning community so that each individual is equipped to persevere and excel in his or her personal and academic journey.
The project is a part of Challenge of Tarrant County’s commitment to ensuring community health and wellness for all who call Tarrant County home.
