Southwest HS Qualifies Nine Straight Years for SkillsUSA National Championships
(Monday, May 17, 2021) -- The Broadcast News Production team from Southwest High School will make its ninth consecutive appearance at the national SkillsUSA Championships this June.
The team qualified for the national competition after recently clinching the SkillsUSA Texas Broadcast News Production championship. The state champion team is made up of seniors Lyeanna Cedillo, Daniel De La Cruz, Cecilia Delgado and Mario Medina.
The national 2021 SkillsUSA Championships is virtual with local “hands-on elements for select competitions,” according to the SkillsUSA website. Competitive events are being held throughout June.
In addition to the first-place finish at state, Southwest picked up two state third-place honors with the sophomore team of Joshua Garcia, Sofia Oo, Nang Sang and Kamryn Singleton in the Broadcast News Production contest, and senior Yamilett Chavira in pin design competition.
Southwest Broadcast Journalism/Media Technology is a Gold Seal Program of Choice. Darcy Deupree McCready is Broadcast Journalism/Media Technology teacher at Southwest and the campus SkillsUSA sponsor.
