FWISD Closed Monday For Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

All Fort Worth ISD (FWISD) facilities are closed Monday, Jan. 17, to observe the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday.

Normal business hours and class schedules will resume Tuesday, Jan.18.

FWISD employees, District Central Administration Leadership, Board of Education trustees, and city leaders are planning to spend a portion of the holiday serving members of the itinerant community in Fort Worth’s West Lancaster Avenue Corridor. For the fourth year, FWISD’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, sponsored by the Equity and Excellence Division, will distribute meals and care packages consisting of hats, gloves, blankets, toiletries, and non-perishable foods to people in need. Observed annually on the third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday honors the birth date of the preacher, author, civil rights leader, and Nobel Peace Prize winner who was assassinated in 1968.

Dr. King is most notably known for his “I Have a Dream” speech delivered at the 1963 March on Washington in Washington, D.C. , and leading a nonviolent movement in the 1950s and `60s advocating for the civil rights of Black Americans and racial equality. Since 1994, the U.S. Congress has commemorated the holiday as a national day of service, encouraging Americans to participate in service projects within their communities.
