Fort Worth ISD Alumna Now Serving Overseas Surprises Dad at Armed Forces Bowl
A former Fort Worth ISD Dunbar High School student who is now serving in the U.S. Navy surprised her father – and more than 40,000 fans – by showing up in person during what was supposed to have been a live video hookup from Italy during the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth.
Regina Carroll, a Navy Petty Officer Third Class, is stationed at Naval Air Station Sigonella. She was seen on the big screen at TCU’s Amon Carter Stadium wishing her father and everyone in Fort Worth hello from Sicily. But minutes into the “transmission,” Regina ran onto the field and leapt into the arms of her father, Reginald Carroll. The sold-out crowd burst into applause – and not a few tears --- at the emotional reunion.
You can watch the video here.
It had been more than two years since she had been home or seen her family.
Raised by her widower father, Regina joined the U.S. Navy in 2016. NAS Sigonella is the Navy's second largest security command, second only to that located at Naval Support Activity Bahrain.
The past year has been very rewarding for Regina as she has advanced to petty officer third class, was awarded second place in Sigonella’s strongman competition, and became a NASM certified personal trainer in June 2018. She has also contributed approximately 25 volunteer hours with the USO while having a part time job at the gym to help pay for college.
After entering the military upon high school graduation, Regina simultaneously started her first college class in July 2016 with the University of Maryland online program and is currently four credits away from her associate’s degree and three credits away from her certificate in Spanish. She maintains a GPA of 3.8 and has been commended by the University of Maryland Dean’s Office for her work.
