Math and Science AKAdemy Aims to Expose Girls to STEM Careers
Raising the Standard Foundation and the Beta Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will present the 2018 Girls’ Math and Science AKAdemy, Saturday, March 3, at Jean McClung Middle School, 3000 Forest Ave.
The 13th annual event exposes girls in the fifth- through eighth-grade to careers in math and science and emphasizes the importance of science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on, interactive workshops facilitated by community volunteers. AKAdemy will begin at 8 a.m. with registration and a continental breakfast and conclude at 1 p.m.
Valencia Rhines, principal at the Leadership Academy at Como Elementary School, and Latisha Manning, assistant principal at Polytechnic High School, are the chairwomen for this year’s event.
Girls entering careers in math and science is far more disproportionate to their male counterparts, AKAdemy organizers say.
“The numbers tell the story,” Ms. Manning said. “Minority women make up fewer than 1 in 10 employed scientists and engineers. That’s why we want to prepare fifth- to eighth-grade girls for STEM careers now.”
The deadline to register for AKAdemy is Friday, February 23.
Registration forms may be submitted electronically to Ms. Manning at latisha.manning@fwisd.org, emailed to raisingthestandardfoundation@gmail.com or physically mailed to Raising the Standard Foundation, P.O. Box 15084, Fort Worth, Texas, 76119.
