Eight Fort Worth ISD High School Students Selected for Lockheed Martin Internship Program
Eight high school juniors from the Fort Worth ISD have been selected to participate in the Lockheed Martin High School Internship Program when they start their senior year this fall. These eight students began their internship journey as part of a group of 140 students from four area school districts competing for just 38 spots in this exclusive and innovative program.
These eight student interns will join one of four teams: Quality, Production Operations, IT, and Engineering and Technology. They will serve in a variety of roles, including but not limited to quality control, business analysis, integration and testing, software engineering, electronics engineering and aeronautical engineering. The 2018-2019 senior students will intern at Lockheed Martin every week from August 2018-May 2019 and gain real-world career experience.
Career and Technical Education STEM Coordinator Stephanie Tennyson coordinated the District’s efforts in the student application process.
“The Lockheed Martin High School Internship Program is an exciting opportunity for our students,” she said. “A highly sought-after internship program, it provides experiences to students that cannot be replicated in the classroom.”
Ms. Tennyson said this program demonstrates Lockheed Martin’s commitment to providing work-based learning opportunities for students in Dallas-Fort Worth and across the nation. The internship program began five years ago with only one school district (Arlington) and five students. This year, it was opened to 38 positions and continues to grow to other Lockheed Martin sites across the nation. Fort Worth ISD students are part of a national movement of work-based learning in high school.
The program will continue to grow, and juniors will be encouraged to apply for the internship program during the 2018-2019 school year as they compete for a limited number of openings for their senior year.
“The CTE Department will advertise the program to 2018-2019 junior students in October,” Ms. Tennyson said. “We will offer after-school resume-building sessions in November. We will offer after-school interview best practices sessions and hold practice interviews with CTE staff in December and January. Students will apply in late February/early March as determined by Lockheed Martin. Students selected for interviews will do so in April 2019, and offers will be extended thereafter.”
Students offered internships will take care of all employment requirements in May 2019 and begin their internships the following August as seniors.
Ms. Tennyson said it is important to note that the application process is not part of in-class curriculum and instruction, which means interested students will need to take care of application requirements and preparation outside of school hours. Luckily, interested students will have the benefit of learning from the first group of interns.
“The 2018-2019 senior students will be ambassadors of the internship program,” Ms. Tennyson said. “We hope to include them in some of the resume building and interview best practices sessions to shed light on what they did and how the process worked for them. Since they have firsthand experience, they can be of great benefit to 2018-2019 junior students.”
All PLTW (Project Lead the Way) students can apply for the internship program. PLTW is an educational organization that provides curriculum, instruction, and professional development around engineering, biomedical sciences and computer science. PLTW is nationally-recognized, and partners with Fortune 500 companies, like Lockheed Martin, to provide teachers and students with powerful curriculum and opportunities outside of the classroom. The high schools that employ the PLTW Engineering curriculum are Diamond Hill-Jarvis, Western Hills, Benbrook, YMLA and YWLA.
