Institute Offers Tips for Teaching in Diverse Classrooms
The Fort Worth ISD Social Studies Department will host its second annual Multicultural Education Institute, Saturday, February 2 at Texas Christian University.
More than 200 educators, including teachers from the Fort Worth ISD, Houston, Austin and other areas of the region, are expected to attend the full-day conference. The Social Studies Department is teaming up with TCU’s Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies to present sessions equipping teachers with curriculum and resources that are culturally responsive to today’s diverse classrooms of students.
More than 20 conference sessions will focus on four strands – Community Connections, Culturally Relevant Instruction, Social Emotional Learning and Literacy, Language and Sociolinguistics. An expo room offers conference attendees opportunities to meet with community organizations and learn of resources that could be of use in the classroom.
Mr. Jacinto Ramos, Jr. District 1 Board of Education trustee, will give the opening keynote address. Dr. David A. Colon, an associate professor of English and Latino Studies at TCU, is this year’s featured speaker.
The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. at TCU’s Rees-Jones Hall, 2901 W. Lowden St.
The Multicultural Education Institute is free and open to FWISD employees and educators outside the District. FWISD staff may RSVP here, and educators outside the district are encouraged to contact the Social Studies Department or email joseph.niedziela@fwisd.org to register.
