Riverside ALC Students Tour Grace Restaurant
Students at Fort Worth ISD’s Riverside Applied Learning Center were recently treated to a special tour of downtown restaurant GRACE, by owner Dain “Adam” Jones.
The April 4 tour is the culmination of an applied learning six-week study of the restaurant and hospitality industry by pre-kindergarten through second-graders participating in the school’s Too Cool to Cook club.
The tour taught students about:
- The importance of healthy eating
- Life skills associated with cooking
- Making healthy choices
- How food is prepared in a restaurant
- The culinary arts path to become a chef
- Table etiquette
“GRACE restaurant is well known for its unparalleled level of hospitality, good food, service and award-winning chefs,” said Principal Joann Dickerson. “After six weeks of engaging in challenging tasks such as researching and preparing healthy food options, restaurant and table manner etiquette, converting ingredient measurements as well as the proper way to use cooking utensils, students embarked on a detailed tour of the elite restaurant where executive chef Blaine Staniford a rising star in the culinary world, prepared a healthy snack for them.”
Ms. Dickerson and master chef instructor Joy Woolard, the family communications liaison at Riverside ALC, and parent chaperones accompanied students on the tour.
The applied learning model applies real-world experiences to all campus content areas.
