UV4C Encourages Community to Observe ‘The Future is Bright: A Week of Suicide Prevention,’ September 27- October 1
Fort Worth ISD’s Board of Education is expected to approve a resolution tonight, Tuesday, September 28, proclaiming this week as The Future is Bright: A Week of Suicide Prevention, September 27- October 1 in the District.
The weeklong observance, is spearheaded by FWISD student group, United Voices for Change (UV4C). The organization is a program that encourages students to use their voices to make positive change in their communities and on their school campuses.
The Future is Bright: A Week of Suicide Prevention includes activities, conversations and programming focused on reducing the stigma of mental illness and educating the Tarrant County community about the warning signs of someone at risk of suicide. Through The Future Is Bright, UV4C’s desire is to spread the word that everyone matters, is welcomed and that “The Future Is Bright!”
FWISD employees, students and their families are invited to participate in a week of activities including:
Monday: Wear green screen to support mental health awareness. Students and staff are also encouraged to post positive notes around their school and decorate lockers to encourage others.
Tuesday: Sign your school banner supporting suicide awareness. Take photos with hashtag signs and post them to social media. Post pictures with your campus banner or hashtag signs #bealifeline, #myfutureisbright, #brightfutures and #youmatter on social media.
Wednesday: Wear teal or purple to support suicide prevention
Thursday: “Team up” against suicide wearing team apparel from your favorite team. Support your favorite team, not just team sports.
Friday: Wear bright colors, college or tie-dye shirts, sunglasses celebrating your bright future.
For additional information about UV4C’s The Future is Bright: A Week of Suicide Prevention activities, email Ms. Cynthia Bethany, FWISD Prevention and Crisis Response director, at Cynthia.bethany@fwisd.org or Kathryn Everest, director of FWISD Counseling Services, at Kathryn.everest@fwisd.org.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth in Tarrant County and the second leading cause of death among individuals age 15-24 in the United States. Raising awareness about mental health illness, identifying the warning signs early, and providing support is critical to suicide prevention. UV4C’s The Future is Bright: A Week of Suicide Prevention coincides with the final week of National Suicide Prevention Month.
The Fort Worth ISD Family Resource Centers (FRCs) have licensed mental health clinicians available to help FWISD students and families. Clinicians are available year-round, to respond to parents and provide them with a consultation. If you need assistance, please call 817-814-2870 or email FRCEmails@fwisd.org.
If you or someone you know is considering suicide or having suicidal thoughts, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 for help. The crisis hotline, which provides free and confidential emotional support, is available 24/7.
