O.D. Wyatt HS Hosts Walk, Expo
The O.D. Wyatt Alumni Association hosted the Fort Worth Walking for Wellness + Expo, Saturday, November 3.
The association partnered with local recording artist and Wyatt alum Sweet Bennie Ray to host this free one-mile community walk and wellness expo at O.D. Wyatt High School.
In memory of Sweet Bennie Ray’s sister and Wyatt alumna, Ralea Brown, 25, who succumbed to diabetes earlier this year, the event encouraged residents to exercise and recognize Type 2 Diabetes symptoms.
The expo included health information, effective management and lifestyle change workshops, food preparation demonstrations and vendor presentations.
O.D. Wyatt High School received a $250 grant from the alumni association for being the school with the most registered participants.
“Our goal is to get residents walking in their communities, utilizing school tracks in their neighborhoods taking advantage of this free form of exercise,” said Dione Sims, walk organizer. “Another goal of the walk is to educate attendees on recognizing the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, treating the diagnosis, living with and managing diabetes with diet, exercise and medication. Type 2 Diabetes now affects youth and minorities more than any other [group] of people, and they also are the least educated about its effects.”
